The word motel<\/em> hit Jack like a gunshot of its own.<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t wait for sirens. Didn\u2019t wait for backup.<\/p>\n

\u201cStay here,\u201d he told the girl, though he knew she wouldn\u2019t listen. Kids like her never did\u2014not when fear had already taught them the world didn\u2019t wait.<\/p>\n

He shoved the man against the car, yanked the keys from his pocket, and tossed them aside. A couple of shaken diners had gathered at the back door now, frozen between fear and curiosity.<\/p>\n

\u201cCall the police,\u201d Jack barked. \u201cTell them we\u2019ve got a situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then he ran.<\/p>\n

The motel sat a quarter mile down the road, its flickering neon sign buzzing like a dying insect. Desert Star Motel.<\/em> Half the rooms looked abandoned. The other half looked worse.<\/p>\n

Jack\u2019s boots hit gravel hard, breath steady\u2014but his chest carried something heavier than adrenaline.<\/p>\n

Memory.<\/p>\n

Another motel. Another door.<\/p>\n

Another time he\u2019d hesitated.<\/p>\n

He shoved it down.<\/p>\n

Not now.<\/p>\n

Room 12.<\/p>\n

The number felt certain before he even saw it. Instinct, sharpened by years of getting things wrong before finally getting them right.<\/p>\n

The door was shut. Curtains drawn.<\/p>\n

Too quiet.<\/p>\n

Jack stepped close, pressing his ear against the wood.<\/p>\n

Nothing.<\/p>\n

He knocked once. Hard.<\/p>\n

\u201cPolice!\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence answered.<\/p>\n

His jaw tightened. He stepped back\u2014then slammed his shoulder into the door.<\/p>\n

The lock gave with a crack.<\/p>\n

The smell hit him first.<\/p>\n

Stale air. Sweat. Fear.<\/p>\n

Then he saw her.<\/p>\n

The woman lay motionless on the bed, one arm hanging off the side. A bruise darkened her temple.<\/p>\n

Jack froze\u2014watching.<\/p>\n

Waiting.<\/p>\n

There.<\/p>\n

A breath.<\/p>\n

Faint. Fragile.<\/p>\n

But real.<\/p>\n

Relief tore through him so suddenly it almost hurt.<\/p>\n

He moved fast, checking her pulse. Weak, but steady.<\/p>\n

\u201cStay with me,\u201d he muttered.<\/p>\n

A shattered vial glittered on the floor. Not accidental. Not harmless.<\/p>\n

His hands clenched\u2014then released.<\/p>\n

Focus.<\/p>\n

He grabbed the motel phone, slammed it until the line came alive.<\/p>\n

\u201cI need an ambulance,\u201d he snapped. \u201cDesert Star Motel, room twelve. Female, unconscious but breathing. Possible assault.\u201d<\/p>\n

He paused.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo\u2014she\u2019s alive. Just get here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Outside, sirens finally began to rise.<\/p>\n

Jack exhaled slowly, like he\u2019d been holding his breath for years.<\/p>\n

Then\u2014<\/p>\n

Footsteps.<\/p>\n

Fast. Small.<\/p>\n

He turned just as the girl burst through the broken doorway.<\/p>\n

\u201cMommy!\u201d<\/p>\n

She scrambled onto the bed, clutching her mother\u2019s arm, her tiny voice breaking.<\/p>\n

\u201cWake up\u2026 please\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Jack stepped back, giving them space.<\/p>\n

For a moment, nothing changed.<\/p>\n

Then\u2014<\/p>\n

A stir.<\/p>\n

A breath that caught.<\/p>\n

Eyelids fluttered.<\/p>\n

The woman\u2019s fingers twitched beneath her daughter\u2019s grip.<\/p>\n

And then her eyes opened.<\/p>\n

Confusion\u2026 fear\u2026 then recognition.<\/p>\n

\u201cBaby\u2026?\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

The girl broke into tears, collapsing against her.<\/p>\n

Red and blue lights filled the room as police and paramedics rushed in.<\/p>\n

But Jack didn\u2019t move.<\/p>\n

He just stood there, watching.<\/p>\n

Something inside him\u2014something old, something heavy\u2014finally loosened.<\/p>\n

Years ago, there had been another child.<\/p>\n

Another moment.<\/p>\n

Another door he didn\u2019t break down fast enough.<\/p>\n

That memory had followed him everywhere.<\/p>\n

Until now.<\/p>\n

One of the officers approached. \u201cYou okay?\u201d<\/p>\n

Jack nodded once, eyes still on the mother and child.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n
