But it felt final.<\/p>\n
The boy flinched slightly at the sound, like he expected it to mean something else\u2014something permanent. Something that couldn\u2019t be undone.<\/p>\n
Grant noticed.<\/p>\n
\u201cRelax,\u201d he said calmly, tossing the rag aside. \u201cIt\u2019s just a gate.\u201d<\/p>\n
But the boy didn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n
He stood there, just inside the boundary, like crossing that line had taken more out of him than he expected. The noise of the garage slowly came back to life\u2014tools clinking, engines humming low\u2014but softer now, like everything was watching without staring.<\/p>\n
Grant stepped closer, not crowding him.<\/p>\n

Grant stopped beside a stripped-down motorcycle frame sitting on a stand. It was incomplete\u2014engine exposed, parts missing, metal dull with wear.<\/p>\n
\u201cSee this?\u201d Grant said.<\/p>\n
Evan nodded.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt doesn\u2019t run,\u201d Grant continued. \u201cNot right now. Missing pieces. Been that way for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n
Evan looked at it closer. \u201cCan it be fixed?\u201d<\/p>\n
Grant didn\u2019t answer right away.<\/p>\n
Instead, he picked up a wrench and placed it in Evan\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat depends,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Evan looked down at the tool like it didn\u2019t belong there.<\/p>\n
Then back at Grant.<\/p>\n
\u201cOn what?\u201d<\/p>\n
Grant met his eyes.<\/p>\n
\u201cOn whether you\u2019re willing to do the work\u2026 or just stand there talking about it.\u201d<\/p>\n
That landed.<\/p>\n
Not harsh.<\/p>\n
But real.<\/p>\n
Evan\u2019s grip on the wrench tightened slightly.<\/p>\n
Behind them, one of the older riders leaned back against a workbench.<\/p>\n

Another shrugged. \u201cGuts ain\u2019t enough.\u201d<\/p>\n
Grant didn\u2019t turn.<\/p>\n
\u201cGood thing I didn\u2019t say it was,\u201d he replied.<\/p>\n
Then he looked back at Evan.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou don\u2019t prove anything in one moment,\u201d he said. \u201cNot here. Not anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n
Evan nodded slowly.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ll do whatever it takes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Grant gave a small, almost invisible smile.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ll see.\u201d<\/p>\n
He gestured toward the bike again.<\/p>\n
\u201cStart with that bolt,\u201d he said. \u201cLoosen it. Not too fast\u2014you\u2019ll strip it if you rush.\u201d<\/p>\n
