The engines didn\u2019t roar for attention.<\/p>\n

They came alive with purpose.<\/p>\n

One after another, the bikes rolled out of the diner lot, tires cutting through the dust as the formation locked in almost instinctively. At the front, the VP rode hard but controlled, the small boy secured safely behind another rider, wrapped in a jacket far too big for him.<\/p>\n

No sirens.<\/p>\n

No noise beyond what was necessary.<\/p>\n

Just speed\u2014and intent.<\/p>\n

The highway blurred beneath them as the address replayed in the VP\u2019s mind, every word the boy had whispered carving deeper with each mile.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026my brother\u2026 he can\u2019t get out\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

That was enough.<\/p>\n

They didn\u2019t speak over comms unless needed. Every rider already understood the line\u2014this wasn\u2019t a show of force.<\/p>\n

When they turned off the highway, the road narrowed quickly, asphalt giving way to cracked concrete and then to a quiet residential stretch that didn\u2019t feel right. Too still. Too unaware.<\/p>\n

The bikes slowed.<\/p>\n

The VP raised a hand.<\/p>\n

Behind them, the boy was gently lifted off and kept at a safe distance, one rider crouching beside him.<\/p>\n

The boy nodded, but his eyes never left the house.<\/p>\n

At the door, the VP didn\u2019t knock softly.<\/p>\n

He knocked once\u2014hard.<\/p>\n

No answer.<\/p>\n

He tried the handle.<\/p>\n

Locked.<\/p>\n

A glance passed between him and the others.<\/p>\n

Then\u2014<\/p>\n

A sound.<\/p>\n

Faint.<\/p>\n

From inside.<\/p>\n

Not a voice.<\/p>\n

Something else.<\/p>\n

A dull, irregular thud.<\/p>\n

The VP didn\u2019t hesitate again.<\/p>\n

\u201cBack,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

One step.<\/p>\n

Then his shoulder hit the door.<\/p>\n

Once.<\/p>\n

Twice\u2014<\/p>\n

The lock gave way with a sharp crack.<\/p>\n

Inside, the air felt wrong immediately.<\/p>\n

Heavy.<\/p>\n

Still.<\/p>\n

Like it had been holding something in.<\/p>\n

\u201cCheck left,\u201d he ordered.<\/p>\n

\u201cBack rooms,\u201d another responded.<\/p>\n

The VP moved straight ahead.<\/p>\n

\u201cBathroom,\u201d the boy had said.<\/p>\n

He followed the hallway, each step faster, the faint sound growing clearer now\u2014water\u2026 and something else beneath it.<\/p>\n

He reached the door.<\/p>\n

Closed.<\/p>\n

Locked from the inside.<\/p>\n

His jaw tightened.<\/p>\n

No pause this time.<\/p>\n

He drove his weight forward\u2014<\/p>\n

The door burst open.<\/p>\n

Water.<\/p>\n

Overflowing.<\/p>\n

Spilling across the floor.<\/p>\n

And there\u2014<\/p>\n

A small figure.<\/p>\n

Still.<\/p>\n

Half-submerged in a bathtub that had been left running far too long.<\/p>\n

The VP moved instantly.<\/p>\n

No hesitation.<\/p>\n

No shock allowed.<\/p>\n

He shut off the water with one motion, then reached in, lifting the boy out carefully but urgently.<\/p>\n

\u201cHey\u2014hey, stay with me,\u201d he said, voice firm but controlled.<\/p>\n

The child didn\u2019t respond.<\/p>\n

One of the bikers appeared at the doorway.<\/p>\n

\u201cGot him?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCall it in. Now,\u201d the VP snapped.<\/p>\n

Within seconds, another rider was already on the phone, voice sharp and precise, giving location, urgency, details that mattered.<\/p>\n

The VP carried the boy into the hallway, laying him flat.<\/p>\n

\u201cCome on, kid\u2026\u201d he muttered, starting first aid without thinking twice.<\/p>\n

Water spilled from the child\u2019s mouth.<\/p>\n

A cough.<\/p>\n

Weak.<\/p>\n

But there.<\/p>\n

Everyone froze for half a second.<\/p>\n

Then movement again.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmbulance is coming,\u201d someone called out.<\/p>\n

The VP didn\u2019t stop.<\/p>\n

\u201cStay with me,\u201d he repeated, quieter now.<\/p>\n

Moments later, the sound of sirens finally cut through the silence outside.<\/p>\n

Not distant this time.<\/p>\n

Close.<\/p>\n

Real.<\/p>\n

Behind them, another rider emerged from a side room, expression dark.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s not here,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The VP didn\u2019t look up.<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t need to ask who.<\/p>\n

That part would come next.<\/p>\n

Right now\u2014<\/p>\n

The child on the floor took another breath.<\/p>\n

And that was enough to keep everything moving forward.<\/p>\n

Outside, the boy who had run into the diner stood frozen as he saw his brother carried out.<\/p>\n

Alive.<\/p>\n

Barely.<\/p>\n

But alive.<\/p>\n

One of the bikers placed a steady hand on his shoulder.<\/p>\n
