Like he had every right.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"251\" data-end=\"301\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Jack Malone<\/span><\/span> didn\u2019t move.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"303\" data-end=\"351\">\u201cBar\u2019s closed,\u201d Jack said, voice low and steady.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"353\" data-end=\"491\">The man\u2019s eyes flicked around the room, taking in the leather cuts, the silent stares, the kind of men who didn\u2019t bluff. Still, he smiled.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"493\" data-end=\"578\">\u201cPolice business,\u201d he replied, flashing his badge. \u201cThat girl belongs in my custody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"580\" data-end=\"682\">A few of the bikers shifted in their seats, boots scraping against the floor. Not nervous. Just ready.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"684\" data-end=\"777\">Behind Jack, the little girl grabbed a fistful of his shirt, pressing her face into his back.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"779\" data-end=\"812\">\u201cShe\u2019s scared of you,\u201d Jack said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"814\" data-end=\"958\">Officer Reeves sighed like this was all inconvenient. \u201cKids get confused. Trauma does that. Now let\u2019s not make this harder than it needs to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"960\" data-end=\"1017\">\u201cNo,\u201d the girl whispered, louder this time. \u201cHe\u2019s lying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1019\" data-end=\"1076\">That word\u2014<em data-start=\"1029\" data-end=\"1036\">lying<\/em>\u2014hit the room like a spark in dry grass.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1078\" data-end=\"1156\">Jack\u2019s expression didn\u2019t change, but something darker settled behind his eyes.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1158\" data-end=\"1183\">\u201cYou heard her,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1185\" data-end=\"1212\">Reeves took a step forward.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1214\" data-end=\"1231\">\u201cI\u2019m not asking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1233\" data-end=\"1257\">That was the wrong move.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1259\" data-end=\"1385\">Three chairs scraped back at once. The Iron Saints didn\u2019t stand all the way up\u2014but they didn\u2019t need to. The message was clear.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1387\" data-end=\"1429\">You take another step, you don\u2019t walk out.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1431\" data-end=\"1446\">Reeves stopped.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1448\" data-end=\"1478\">His smile faded just a little.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1480\" data-end=\"1588\">\u201cYou really want to interfere with a police investigation?\u201d he asked. \u201cThat\u2019s obstruction. Could get messy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1590\" data-end=\"1685\">Jack tilted his head slightly. \u201cFunny thing about messes\u2026 we\u2019re real good at cleaning them up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1687\" data-end=\"1724\">A low chuckle rolled through the bar.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1726\" data-end=\"1876\">The girl\u2019s small voice came again, shaking but determined. \u201cHe put me in his car\u2026 but it didn\u2019t smell like a police car. And the doors wouldn\u2019t open.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1878\" data-end=\"1911\">Every man in the room heard that.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1913\" data-end=\"2040\">Jack crouched slightly, not taking his eyes off Reeves. \u201cYou hear that?\u201d he asked softly. \u201cDoesn\u2019t sound like procedure to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2042\" data-end=\"2082\">Reeves\u2019 jaw tightened. \u201cShe\u2019s confused.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2084\" data-end=\"2154\">\u201cMaybe,\u201d Jack said. \u201cOr maybe you\u2019re not who that badge says you are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2156\" data-end=\"2174\">Silence stretched.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2176\" data-end=\"2230\">Then Reeves laughed\u2014but there was no warmth in it now.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2232\" data-end=\"2321\">\u201cYou don\u2019t want to do this,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cYou have no idea who you\u2019re dealing with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2323\" data-end=\"2352\">Jack finally stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2354\" data-end=\"2390\">Now they were only a few feet apart.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2392\" data-end=\"2449\">\u201cYeah,\u201d Jack replied. \u201cThat\u2019s the problem. I think I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2451\" data-end=\"2489\">Reeves\u2019 hand twitched near his jacket.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2491\" data-end=\"2514\">It didn\u2019t go unnoticed.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2516\" data-end=\"2620\">In an instant, the room shifted\u2014boots planted, bodies angled, eyes locked. Predators, every one of them.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2622\" data-end=\"2661\">Jack\u2019s voice dropped to a near whisper.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2663\" data-end=\"2672\">\u201cTry it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2674\" data-end=\"2695\">A long second passed.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2697\" data-end=\"2710\">Then another.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2712\" data-end=\"2782\">Reeves slowly lifted his hands\u2014just enough to show he wasn\u2019t reaching.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2784\" data-end=\"2790\">Smart.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2792\" data-end=\"2807\">But not enough.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2809\" data-end=\"2926\">\u201cHere\u2019s what\u2019s gonna happen,\u201d Jack said. \u201cYou\u2019re gonna turn around, walk out that door\u2026 and forget you ever saw her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2928\" data-end=\"3009\">Reeves shook his head, that smile creeping back in, thinner now. \u201cCan\u2019t do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3011\" data-end=\"3056\">Jack didn\u2019t blink. \u201cThen you\u2019re not leaving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3058\" data-end=\"3070\">That landed.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3072\" data-end=\"3134\">For the first time, uncertainty flickered across Reeves\u2019 face.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3136\" data-end=\"3223\">From the back of the bar, one of the bikers spoke up. \u201cBoss\u2026 you might wanna see this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3225\" data-end=\"3267\">A phone slid across the table toward Jack.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3269\" data-end=\"3293\">He glanced down briefly.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3295\" data-end=\"3303\">A photo.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3305\" data-end=\"3318\">Then another.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3320\" data-end=\"3332\">And another.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3334\" data-end=\"3363\">Each one worse than the last.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3365\" data-end=\"3385\">Jack\u2019s jaw clenched.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3387\" data-end=\"3471\">Slowly, he looked back up at Reeves\u2014and now there was no restraint left in his eyes.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3473\" data-end=\"3530\">\u201cYeah,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cYou\u2019re definitely not leaving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3532\" data-end=\"3573\">The girl tightened her grip on his shirt.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3575\" data-end=\"3615\">\u201cIs he going to hurt me?\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3617\" data-end=\"3641\">Jack didn\u2019t turn around.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3643\" data-end=\"3657\">\u201cNo,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3659\" data-end=\"3682\">His voice was absolute.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3684\" data-end=\"3774\">Because in that moment, every man in the Last Stop Bar had already decided the same thing\u2014<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3776\" data-end=\"3805\">No one was taking that child.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3807\" data-end=\"3819\">Not tonight.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3821\" data-end=\"3830\">Not ever.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For a second, no one breathed.
